    What is Swiss CNC Machining?

    Swiss machining, also known as Swiss-type turning or sliding headstock machining, is a specialized CNC machining process designed to manufacture small, highly precise cylindrical components.

    Unlike conventional CNC lathes, Swiss machines support the workpiece using a guide bushing positioned very close to the cutting tool. As the bar stock advances through the guide bushing, the cutting tools machine the material while maintaining continuous support.

    This design significantly reduces material deflection during machining, allowing Swiss machines to achieve exceptional precision on long, slender, and intricate parts that would be difficult or impossible to manufacture efficiently on conventional turning centers.

    Because many machining operations can be completed without transferring the part to another machine, Swiss machining also improves repeatability while reducing handling, setup time, and overall production costs.

    What production quantities do you support?
    From approximately 25 to 50 pieces for prototypes up to 10,000 to 50,000+ for production programs.
    What part sizes and tolerances can Swiss CNC machining achieve?
    Swiss lathes are built for small-diameter, high-precision work, typically handling stock from around 1 mm up to about 32 mm in diameter (some machines go to 38 mm or larger). They routinely hold tolerances in the range of ±0.0002″ to ±0.0005″ (roughly ±0.005–0.013 mm), which is why they’re favored for medical, aerospace, electronics, and micro-mechanical components.
    How is Swiss CNC machining different from conventional CNC turning?
    The key difference is the sliding headstock and guide bushing. In Swiss-type machining, the bar stock moves axially through a guide bushing while the tools remain stationary in the Z-axis, so cutting always happens very close to the point of support.
    Do you machine titanium?
    Yes. We machine titanium for medical, aerospace and defense applications.
    Do you provide inspection reports?
    Inspection documentation is available based on customer and drawing requirements.

    What materials can be Swiss machined?
    We commonly machine 300 and 400 stainless steel, alloy steel, aluminum, brass, titanium and a variety of engineering plastics.
    What is your typical lead time?
    On average we are around 6 to 10 weeks. Depending on time of year this can vary so we try and run parts to either a min max or run EAU quantities to inventory and release them throughout the year. This helps eliminate any lead time issues as well as gives you the best possible piece price as our set up costs get amortized over more parts.
